Although Microsoft has been feeling the heat from users and analysts concerned about the rash of vulnerabilities in the Internet Explorer browser, company officials Thursday wouldn't commit to a timetable for fixing the problem-plagued browser.
In an online chat session Thursday, Microsoft executives shied away from putting a date on a calendar.
Last Friday, Microsoft released a quick fix for the vulnerability that was used by Russian hackers the week before to compromise systems of users who had browsed pages produced by infected Web servers.
"Microsoft is working to provide a series of security updates to Internet Explorer in coming weeks that will provide additional protections," the company said when it released that fix. "A comprehensive update will be released once it has been thoroughly tested."
Although Microsoft could release a comprehensive patch for IE at any time, it typically rolls out security fixes the second Tuesday of each month. The next scheduled patch day is next Tuesday, July 13.
