eEye Digital Security, a security vendor that often leads the way by spotting more vulnerabilities than most rivals, on Monday introduced a new version of its Retina Network Security Scanner.
Retina 5.0, which sniffs through networks and identifies vulnerabilities, now includes an asset discovery feature that lists all hardware and software on the network, helpful in spotting rogue machines -- such as unauthorized laptops -- that may pose a threat.
It also sports an enhanced vulnerability assessment and remediation workflow which guides users through the process of discovering, auditing, modifying, and then reporting on network vulnerabilities. New reporting functions let IT administrators sort data by vulnerability, machine type, and risk level.
The software can be customized by IT to scan for a wide range of variables, including operating system, location, and device type, and now includes scanning for Internet Control Messaging Protocol (ICMP) operating system detection, giving companies a more accurate idea of the type and version of the operating systems running on the network.
Retina 5.0 is integrated with eEye's Retina Enterprise Suite, which includes the REM Security Management Console, a central interface that collects information from multiple Retina scanners in a distributed network.
Retina 5.0 is available now, and runs on Windows NT, 2000, and XP, although it can scan systems running all types of operating systems, including Unix.
