Corel's WordPerfect Office 12 Arrives At Retail

By

Corel's WordPerfect Office 12 shows the Canadian software maker can still compete in a tough marketplace. The software suite that consists of WordPerfect word processor, Quattro Pro spreadsheet, and WordPerfect Presentations slide-show maker arrived in retail stores Tuesday.

In its latest version, Corel touts compatibility with Microsoft Office, which dominates the business productivity software field. Some of the changes in WordPerfect Office 12 include increased compatibility with Microsoft's Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications.

"The release of WordPerfect Office 12 signals a new era of growth for one of the world's best-recognized office suites," Amish Mehta, CEO of Corel, said in a statement. "With the support of over 18 million users worldwide and a global distribution network spanning five continents, WordPerfect Office 12 is the clear choice for value-conscious consumers, small-to-medium sized businesses, as well as government and legal customers seeking a full-featured, value-priced office suite that can co-exist within a Microsoft environment."

The release is also significant because it is the first full version of the popular alternative suite since the Canadian developer went private last year following a $98 million buyout by venture capital firm Vector Capital. At the time of the investment, the firm said it would concentrate on the company's core products, including CorelDraw and WordPerfect Office.

Pricing for the standard edition of WordPerfect Office 12 starts at $299 for the full version, $149 for the upgrade, the company said.
