Sometimes no news is good news: Tuesday came and went without a release of a single security patch from Microsoft.
Microsoft, which two months ago changed its security bulletin release schedule from weekly to monthly, now debuts patches on the second Tuesday of each month. Yesterday, it posted no new bulletins.
Although there exists the possibility that one or more patches could appear in December -- Microsoft has said it reserves the right to release critical patches at any time -- the absence of new bulletins is an encouraging sign for IT administrators, who have scrambled this year to deploy a growing number of fixes for Microsoft's wares.
On the other hand, since vulnerability investigation and patch testing takes weeks, the fact that Microsoft skipped a month doesn't necessarily mean there's nothing in the pipeline, only that no new patch is ready.
The next scheduled release date for Microsoft security bulletins and patches is Jan. 13, 2004.
