Lindows.com on Tuesday rolled out an under-$200 Linux-powered PC suitable as a Web-only workstation for businesses and as the foundation of public kiosks that connect to the Internet.
The Lindows WebStation, which is available immediately from TigerDirect and idotpc.com at prices starting at $169, uses the OS-on-a-CD that Lindows released last week.
The LindowsCD, based on the Lindows 4.0 operating system, includes Web browsers, Microsoft-compatible business applications that can read and edit Word and Excel documents, audio/video playback software, and instant messaging, powers the new WebStation. No hard disk is required, one of the reasons for the WebStation's low price.
TigerDirect's version sells for $189, and includes an AMD Duron 1.1GHz processor, 256MB of memory, a 10/100 Ethernet connection, and a CD-ROM drive. idotpc.com's $169 system is similar, but relies on the VIA C3 E-Series 800MHz processor. Neither price includes a monitor, however.
