Red Hat Inc. has introduced Linux 7.1, which incorporates the latest version of the Linux kernel and improved enterprise functionality.
The new version, available April 24, also includes configuration tools designed to make it easier to set up and administer DNS, Web, and print servers and other network connectivity functionality.
The new version supports 64 Gbytes of physical RAM, a greater number of users and groups, a revised scheduler to handle more processes, greater device support, and an improved multi-threaded network stack.
The increased RAM and improved multiprocessing support is part of the Version 2.4 Linux kernel, the latest Linux version, which was released in January and is free and open-source, available to anyone.
Red Hat's competitors are expected to come out with their own 2.4-based versions.
Red Hat (stock: RHAT) also introduced Software Manager, an Internet-based service for distributing bug notices, security alerts, and software updates, priced at $9.95 per system per month through Sept. 1, and $19.95 per month after that.
Red Hat Linux 7.1 is available packaged with support and the Software Manager service, starting at $39.95 with 30 days of Web support and 30 days of Software Manager.
