Legal proceedings have helped spur consumer awareness of downloading music to the point that sales of digital music players supporting MP3 will soar to $1.25 billion by the end of 2002. That's up from $126 million last year, according to Cahners In-Stat Group, Scottsdale, Ariz. In 1999 there were only five manufacturers shipping the devices; today, there are more than 50.
