Study Tallies High Expense Of Computer Viruses

By

Computer viruses, ranging from Melissa last fall to the Love Bug this spring and other software toxins, will cost businesses around the globe more than $1.5 trillion this year, InformationWeek Research said Friday. The bill to 50,000 U.S. firms this year for viruses and computer hacking will amount to $266 billion, or 2.5 percent of the nation's economic activity measured as the gross domestic product. The findings indicate that viruses are far more disruptive to business than most realize, InformationWeek said. InformationWeek, like TechWeb, is owned by CMP Media.
