By Tom Stein,
The annual JavaOne conference kicked off Tuesday in San Francisco with Sun Microsystems announcing a deal with 3Com to integrate the Java programming language into the PalmPilot handheld computer.
The new Java 2 Micro Edition will let Java developers design applications for a host of smaller devices, including the PalmPilot. This could eventually result in a greater software selection for handheld and portable devices.
This is a significant step for the Javalanguage because, to date, it is used almost exclusively within large, corporate computing systems. The new, scaled-down version of Java could help the language gain a more universal appeal. Sun officials said a beta version of the Java 2 Micro Edition can now be downloaded onto a PalmPilot.
Hewlett-Packard, meanwhile, Tuesday released a new Java clone technology called ChaiFreezeDry. HP is also targeting miniature devices such as cell phones and handheld computers with this new software technology.
