By Peter Heywood,
Infonet said on Monday it would pick up the pieces left by AT&T's planned withdrawal from its European joint venture with Unisource.
Under terms of the deal, Infonet, in El Segundo, Calif., will take over the business operations and assets of AT&T Unisource Communication Services, in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands. This includes a share in Worldpartners, of Murray Hill, N.J., another carrier alliance AT&T is quitting to form a joint venture with British Telecommunications, in London.
Infonet's acquisition of AT&T Unisource doesn't come as much of a surprise, because Unisource's shareholders -- former PTTs
in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland -- are also Infonet shareholders.
Sources said Infonet might also absorb Worldpartners, since Kokusai Denshin Denwa, in Tokyo, and Telstra, in Sydney, Australia, were shareholders of both Infonet and Worldpartners.
