Wednesday, IBM will introduce two AMD-powered additions to the Aptiva E Series, the first such systems in what is considered the "hot" $1,000-to-$1,500 price range.
The E56 started shipping Tuesday, and E84 will follow later this week, with expected street prices of $1,399 and $1,499, respectively, said Jim Bartlett, vice president of marketing for Aptiva products at Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM (company profile).
"The K6 [processor] allows us to hit these price points with high-powered PCs. We feel the first-time buyer will go for these because of how much technology they are getting for the price," Bartlett said, adding the expandability will let both units be productive for many years.
The E56 uses a K6 266-MHz processor and features 48 megabytes of synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM
), a
4-gigabyte hard drive, 256 kilobytes of Level 2 cache, 2 MB of video RAM, a 56-kilobit-per-second
modem, and a 24X CD-ROM drive.
The E84 follows the E76 in the Aptiva line. The only differences between the two is the E76 uses an Intel Pentium II 300-MHz processor, while the E84 makes do with the AMD K6 300-MHz version. The E84 features 64 MB of SDRAM, but is otherwise identical to the E56.
