Sun Strikes Grid-Computing Pact With Paris Bank
By TechWeb Technology News
Sun Microsystems Inc. on Wednesday said a Fortune 500 bank in Paris has bought more than 100 servers to boost the performance of the grid-computing infrastructure underlying the customer's risk management application.
The announcement came a week after the Santa Clara, Calif., company touted on Wall Street new technologies for financial services companies.
Under the deal, Equity and Derivatives BNP Paribas, a stocks and derivatives company, has bought 116 Sun Fire V20z servers. The companies did not release financial details, but a V20z server with one or two processors typically costs between $3,000 and $5,000 each.
The servers, which are based on Opteron processors from Advanced Micro Devices Inc., will be part of the computing grid that runs the firm's risk management application, which is used to meet regulations set by the Basle Committee on Banking Supervision of the Bank for International Settlements.
