Online Holiday Sales Expected To Reach $32 Billion

By Antone Gonsalves , TechWeb Technology News

Online holiday retail sales would increase 18 percent this year to $32 billion, a market research firm predicted.

Driving the sales increase would be a record 114 million people who would shop by mouse this year to avoid the long lines and crowds at shopping malls, JupiterResearch said this week. That number reflects a 6 percent increase over last year.

For online retailers, the numbers mean they have a chance to sell more products to returning shoppers, the researcher said. However, more than a third of shoppers will make their purchase at the last-minute, which means retailers should be prepared to ship fast.
