James Powers Joins Softmart as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

PHILADELPHIA, April 3, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Softmart, one of the world's premier information technology resource enterprises, has announced that James Powers has joined the company as executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO). Mr. Powers succeeds Tony Westermann who, after a distinguished career with the company, retired. Mr. Powers will be responsible for all the company's operations including sales, marketing, finance and IT, and will report to Jay Nilson, president and CEO.


An entrepreneur and business operator with a long history of accomplishment in diverse enterprises, Mr. Powers most recently served as chairman, president and CEO of iLinc Communications, Inc., a leading provider of web collaboration solutions focusing on web and video conferencing software development and distribution. The company was sold to Broadsoft, Inc., in September of 2011. 

Prior to establishing iLinc, Mr. Powers founded, grew and ultimately sold a number of businesses. These include Clearidge, Inc., a Nashville, Tenn. based bottled water company that Powers led through 16 acquisitions to become one of the largest independent bottlers in the Southeast before it was sold to Suntory, the second largest bottler in the world. Mr. Powers was also a co-founder and organizational president of Barnill's Buffet, a restaurant chain based in Memphis, Tenn. that ultimately grew to more than 3,000 employees with restaurants throughout the Southeast before it was sold in 2004.  Additionally, Mr. Powers was a co-founder, chairman, president and CEO of Liberty Dental Group in Nashville, Tenn.; Liberty merged with publicly traded Pentegra Dental Group in 1998 and Mr. Powers relocated to Phoenix, Azin. to serve as the company's chairman, president and CEO.

In addition to his business interests, Mr. Powers is active in community service and philanthropy. He currently serves as the vice-chairman of the Arizona Technology Council, that represents approximately 700 tech-related organizations in Arizona; on the board of directors of Camp Soaring Eagle, a medically based camp for seriously ill children; on the board of BioAccel, an Arizona not-for-profit organization focused on economic development through investment and research in biosciences; and on the board of Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management.

Mr. Powers holds a B.S. degree from the University of Memphis and an M.B.A. from Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management. A current resident of Phoenix, Ariz., Mr. Powers and his family will be relocating to the Philadelphia area.
