Most Web-services implementations today are limited pilot projects. But Sony Broadband Services Co., one of Sony's corporate IT organizations, has embraced Web services in a big way by building a Web-services architecture called Web Exchange for interoperability across all Sony companies, including Sony Music Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Sony Electronics. The system, based on Web-services management software from Blue Titan Software Inc. and BEA Systems Inc.'s application server, was completed last month.

"This technology enables us to be quicker to market, provide best-of-breed solutions, and reduce cost and redundancy," says Lew Chang, chief technology officer at Sony Broadband Services. A keyword-lookup service, the first element of interoperable search across all of Sony's online properties, is the first Web Exchange application. The project has an estimated three-year payback.
