Washington can cooperate: The Treasury and Justice departments have awarded billions of dollars in contracts for wireless services designed to improve emergency communications between law-enforcement agencies.

The five-year contracts have a $3 billion ceiling. They cover Land Mobile Radio units, including repeaters, base stations, encryption devices, and portable radios, which federal law-enforcement agencies will use to communicate with one another in the field.

Contracts went to Daniels Electronics, Datron World Communications, E.F. Johnson, M/A Com Private Radio Systems, Motorola, and Thales Communication.
