At CA World 2002 Monday, company co-founder Russell Artzt unveiled the BrightStor Portal, which gives customers Web-based access to the vendor's storage-management capabilities as well as those of partners and competitors such as Veritas Software Corp. and Legato Systems Inc. CA will provide tools for data availability, media management (tape, hard disk, or optical devices), backup and recovery, and storage-resource management. CA will look to other vendors for volume management and virtualization.

Artzt has set BrightStor's course on end-to-end storage management. "To customers, it's too darn complicated to get storage implemented," said Artzt. "We'll try to simplify it," he added, by eventually using BrightStor Portal as a single console to every component on the storage network.

CA already has received one endorsement. When Dave Hitz, co-founder at Network Appliance Inc., was asked whether CA or Veritas would be the first to achieve the necessary integration for a single-management console, he replied: "I like CA."

BrightStor was released in beta Monday and will become generally available in June, priced at $35,000 per server.
