Two-way text messaging may be coming soon to an airline seat near you after the first demo of the technology last week.
On a test run of the Airbus A340-600 jet from Hong Kong to Los Angeles, in-flight messaging vendor Tenzing Communications showed how airborne passengers can exchange Short Message Service text messages with cell-phone users on the ground. Passengers using notebook computers or seatback screens will need to know only a recipient's cell-phone number to communicate via SMS.
Separately, Singapore Airlines plans to offer limited air-to-ground-only SMS service starting in July.
