Oracle is buying GoldenGate Software, a maker of data integration and migration tools. Oracle did not release financial terms, but said the transaction is expected to close this year. GoldenGate will operate independently until the deal is concluded.
Oracle plans to use GoldenGate's technology to enable it to add real-time data-management integration capabilities into its offerings. "Oracle and GoldenGate share a common vision to bring a comprehensive data integration solution to customers," GoldenGate president and CE Ali Kutay, said in a statement.
GoldenGate technology provides low-impact capture, routing, transformation and delivery of database transactions in real-time across heterogeneous computer systems. Oracle plans to incorporate the software in its Fusion Middleware to provide replication and data movement capabilities to heterogeneous sources and targets.
In addition, Oracle expects to use GoldenGate products to enable real-time information feeds to Oracle's business intelligence software and to enable "zero-downtime" migration and upgrades for Oracle business applications.
Media reports of a pending GoldenGate acquisition had been circulating for weeks. The two companies have been partners for years, but talks of an acquisition in the past had reportedly been stalled by disagreements over price.
Oracle is not yet ready to discuss the impact the acquisition would have on current GoldenGate customers. The company said it is reviewing the product portfolio and would eventually provide guidance "in accordance with Oracle's standard product communications policies."
The deal underscores the increasing interest among companies in data management. By acquiring GoldenGate, Oracle is expected to be in a better position to compete more effectively against IBM's Information Server and other data management offerings.
