CDMA operator Cricket Communications on Thursday said it has added to the handsets that will work in the Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum with two new models from Samsung.
MyShot, which Cricket claims is the world's first CDMA AWS camera phone, and the Spex mobile phone will be commercially available nationwide. The tri-band phones also operate on the PCS and cellular bands, enabling them to work in all of Cricket's markets, including Oklahoma City and Las Vegas, which will be activated later this year, the operator said in a statement.
MyShot isn't the first AWS phone the wholly owned subsidiary of Leap Wireless has introduced. Another AWS-enabled phone, the CDM7126 by UT Starcom, was introduced earlier this month.
MyShot has a 1.3-megapixel camera with a self-timer, multishot capabilities, and Bluetooth technology for sharing photos. The phone also supports Web access for browsing and downloading ring tones, graphics, games, applications, and messaging capabilities, and retails for $150.
The Spex phone features an easy-to-use interface, with Bluetooth capability, color display, speakerphone, personal productivity tools, as well as mobile Web access. Spex sells for $120.
Monthly service plans on Cricket start at $35.
"As we prepare to launch the first of our AWS markets, we want to ensure that consumers have a choice of mobile devices," said Al Moschner, Cricket's executive VP. "With today's introduction, both new and existing Cricket subscribers have access to two new wireless phones that incorporate the latest AWS capability, while having the ability to operate on the PCS and cellular bands."
Both phones will be available Friday in Tulsa, Okla.; nationwide availability is expected "soon," said the carrier, which would not provide additional details.
