Hiring managers are using online search engines and social networking sites to screen potential employees, online job site provider CareerBuilder said Thursday as it released the findings of a survey of 1,150 employers.
CareerBuilder said 26 percent of hiring managers reported they used search engines to research prospective employees and 12 percent viewed social networking sites in their screening process.
CareerBuilder said 63 percent of the online social networking probes resulted in hiring managers declining to hire applicants. The figure for search engine research was lower with 51 percent in that category not being hired.
The findings roughly track an earlier survey by ExecuNet, which found that 35 percent of job candidates were dropped after hiring managers checked their qualifications online.
