Google has released a Linux version of the search engine's Picasa photo organizer.

The desktop application, launched this week, on Google Labs incorporates nearly all the features of the Windows version, the Mountain View, Calif., company said on its corporate blog.

Picasa enables people to find, edit and share over the Web photos stored in their computers. The latest version used open-source technology called Wine, which acts as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs on Linux.

As a result, Picasa is faster on Linux than it would be if using an emulator or a virtual machine, Google said.
