Yahoo Inc. started rolling out Tuesday improvements to its web-mail search that includes the ability to check content in email attachments.

Before the enhancements, the Sunnyvale, Calif., portal's mail search was limited to the bodies of emails and characters found in subject lines. The company also has added refinement options that let users get results broken down into five categories, senders, folders, attachments, message status and date.

The new search features include a photo view to see thumbnails of all pictures attached to a result set. From the photo view, users can see higher-resolution photos or save pictures to their hard drive.

An attachment view has been added to see thumbnails of common file types. From the attachment view, files can be transferred to a desktop, following a virus scan.

The improvements will be rolled out gradually, as Yahoo indexes the millions of photos and attachments in its index of billions of messages in Yahoo Mail, the company said in its blog. A timetable for completing the project was not disclosed.
