Amazon Services Inc., a subsidiary of online retail giant Amazon.com Inc., said Wednesday that it has signed a deal to build a branded website for Sears Canada Inc.
Under the deal, Seattle-based Amazon will use its own e-commerce technology and provide Sears Canada with software tools to control its online business. Amazon shopping features planned for the site include search, navigation, personalization and automatic recommendations of products based on shoppers' previous purchases. The Sears Canada site also would include "community features," such as customer reviews.
"Think of it as sears.ca powered by Amazon," Brent Hollister, president and chief executive of Sears Canada, said in a statement. "This is a significant business initiative with aggressive growth opportunities and other long-term benefits and is planned with a substantial return on investment.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Earlier this month, Amazon Services said Marks & Spencer, a major retailer in the United Kingdom, had hired the company to host and provide technology for its website. Under the agreement, Amazon Services would also host Marks & Spencer's in-store and telephone ordering systems, as well as its customer-service systems.
