Original Historical Fiction in English Features 3000-year-old Cadiz for the First Time
May 02, 2012 (05:05 PM EDT)

CHICAGO, May 2, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Older than Rome, this port city on the south coast of Spain served as the key hub for the discovery of America, the global Wall Street of 18th and early 19th centuries, and the birthplace of Civil War General Gordon Meade, the 1863 hero of the Union Army at Gettysburg. The book is entitled The Silver Teacup, came out in March 2012, and has now been launched in a Kindle edition.  Louis Villalba, a native of this town, wrote the fourteen tales that comprise his work. The stories capture readers' imagination and transport them to the narrow streets of Cadiz to witness important ancient and contemporary events: the Roman Empire, Moor and Christian Spain, the Spanish Inquisition, the uprising against Napoleon, the slave trade piracy, the Spanish Civil War, today's reality.

"I couldn't help but think of Tales from the Alhambra as I navigated these 'Tales from Cadiz,'" said Francisco Aragon, Director of Letras Latinas, University of Notre Dame.  "Both use history to accentuate their stories. Like Irving, Villalba deploys good old-fashioned storytelling. And I use that term ('old fashioned') in a good sense: writing that relishes and delights in painting pictures with words—with contagious engagement, narrative skill. The author's attention and dedication to his craft is evident."

Writer by night and neurologist by day, Villalba resides in Chicago. He named the book after Cadiz's nickname in the Hispanic world, "La Tacita de Plata."  This is also the title of the Spanish version of his book.
