European Use of PayPal Hits New Highs on Shopatron Client Stores
Apr 26, 2012 (04:04 PM EDT)

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif., April 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In the short time since its European debut in the online stores of Shopatron clients, PayPal payments have risen to account for a significant percentage of payments in those stores. As of April 2012, nearly 30% of all Shopatron orders made in euros and 27% of British pound orders were paid using PayPal.

PayPal payments in European currencies have grown rapidly since the payment method was added to all UK eCommerce store sites in December 2011. British pound payments have risen from 14.2% of sales just after launch to almost 27% four months later. But the growth in the use of PayPal for euros is even more impressive, jumping from 9% of all March orders fulfilled in that currency to 27% in the month of April.

"Shopatron has consistently worked to release eCommerce features that European consumers are looking for," said Nelson Flores, Vice President of Product at Shopatron. "With the PayPal payment method, it seems we have found something that works well for European shoppers, ultimately leading to more sales for our clients."

In the US, PayPal continues to be a popular payment method for Shopatron online stores, although to a lesser degree. The percentage of orders paid with PayPal in US dollars grew from 9.4% to 13.7% between December 2011 and April 2012.

But the best news about PayPal usage is that it has had a positive effect on shopper conversion. Shopatron's Traffic & Conversion team believes that the improved conversion comes from offering an alternative form of payment for shoppers who:

  • would normally abandon an order because they don't have a credit card,
  • are uncomfortable submitting their credit card online, or
  • simply don't want to take the time to enter their credit card information.

"Our customers, especially the ones buying from branded manufacturer websites, are looking for convenience and a premium shopping experience," added Flores. "Because PayPal resonates well with those customers, we believe convenience is a factor in the significant use of the payment method."
