Non-partisan organization now connecting with more than 1.5 million, one of the largest groups engaging Millennials ages 18-29
WASHINGTON, Sept. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As Americans honor Constitution Day, Generation Opportunity is proud to present its latest effort, "The Constitution" on Facebook, which has grown to more than half a million active and engaged fans. Generation Opportunity is connecting with more than 1.5 million people, making it one of the largest and fastest growing groups engaged with Millennials today. The nonprofit, nonpartisan organization targeting young Americans ages 18-29 recently announced that its popular social media platform – "Being American" on Facebook – had surged to more than one million fans.
"'The Constitution' on Facebook is a platform we created for people to debate current issues or to share their own knowledge and learn from others about this unique and enduring symbol of American freedom," said Paul T. Conway, President of Generation Opportunity and a former Chief of Staff of the United States Department of Labor under Secretary Elaine L. Chao. "The Constitution is a document owned by neither major political party. It is a uniquely American document with which we can all identify and find clarity of critical issues of the day. As young Americans see the results of increased government intervention through higher taxes and more federal regulations, many Americans are looking to the Constitution for the principles on which we should be governed."
"The Constitution" on Facebook serves as a platform to discuss broad issues such as Constitutional history, the role of government in society, and individual freedom as well as hot news topics such as taxes, health care, and government regulation. The importance and impact of using social media to promote civic engagement has been a growing area of interest since the 2008 elections. A study reported on by CNET news found that 99 percent of young people have profiles on social networks. In addition, a recent Pew study on the issue found that the number of people using social networking sites has doubled since 2008. It also found that "compared with other internet users…a Facebook user...[is] an additional two and half times more likely to attend a political rally or meeting, 57% more likely to persuade someone on their vote, and an additional 43% more likely to have said they would vote." Generation Opportunity will continue to engage young Americans on issues that impact their lives and the nation as a whole, and encourage them through both social media and grassroots organizing to become more civically engaged and make their voices heard.
