Launching of the South-South Awards at the United Nations

NEW YORK, Sept. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Today South-South News launched the South-South Awards during a press conference at the United Nations. His Excellency Joseph Deiss, President of the General Assembly (PGA), Ambassador Francis Lorenzo, President of South-South News, world renowned violinist Mira Ben-Ari and top Musical Director Robin DiMaggio were present at the press conference. Ambassador Lorenzo highlighted the PGA's interest in the importance of media and the role that it can play in the sharing of best practices in development, and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and presented him with an award in recognition of his commitment and support in utilizing media as a tool for development.

This set a great atmosphere to highlight the major event which encompasses all the efforts of the PGA and South-South News; the South-South Awards. "The theme for this year's awards will be focused on Digital Health for Digital Development," said Ambassador Francis Lorenzo. "The awards, to be presented to Heads of State and Government, First Ladies, and outstanding leaders in the field of global health from the private sector and civil society, will complement the United Nations High Level Meeting (HLM) on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), to be held at United Nations Headquarters from 19-20 September, 2011."
The Awards Ceremony will feature prominent entertainers from around the world, including Grammy Award Winners Kenny G and Roberta Flack, Model and Actress Patricia Velasquez, Mini Ben-Ari, former Eagles guitarist Don Felder and other exciting performers backed up by a world class band led by critically acclaimed Musical Director Robin DiMaggio. The event will be held on the evening of September 19, 2011 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.
