Highly integrated LSI system-on-chips (SoCs) and preamplifiers drive breakthrough areal density improvements, raising the bar for HDD capacity and performance
MILPITAS, Calif., Sept. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today announced that its TrueStore hard disk drive (HDD) storage ICs are integrated into the industry's recently announced 3.5-inch hard drives featuring one terabyte of storage capacity per disk platter, the new capacity benchmark for a single disk.
The new 1TB/platter 3.5-inch desktop drives incorporate LSI TrueStore system-on-chip (SoC) solutions, including 40nm read channels featuring second-generation low-density parity check (LDPC) iterative decoding technology. The new 1TB/platter drives also integrate high-performance, low-power LSI TrueStore preamplifiers, creating a complete data path solution from a single supplier.
The LSI storage ICs also feature new innovations in flying height sensing and control that help HDD manufacturers lower head fly heights for increased bit density, drive performance and reliability.
"HDD manufacturers rely on LSI to deliver world-class storage IC technologies that drive next-generation areal density improvements and raise the bar for HDD capacity, power and performance," said Phil Brace, senior vice president and general manager, Storage Peripherals Division, LSI. "Helping our HDD OEM customers break the 1TB areal density barrier is key to meeting the storage demands driven by the worldwide explosion of digital content and cloud-based datacenters."
The LSI TrueStore storage IC product portfolio provides a complete head-to-host recording system design, including preamplifiers, read channels, serial PHYs and ARM® core processor IP. By optimizing the entire system data path, the TrueStore family enables HDD makers to continually develop higher-capacity products with increased performance and lower overall power usage, while enabling faster time-to-volume and lower costs.
By offering a broad portfolio of SoC and preamplifier solutions, LSI enables its HDD customers to address all segments of the storage market, from mission-critical enterprise applications and high-capacity desktop PCs to low-power laptops and tape archive solutions.
