Honoring OGE's innovation in smart grid technology

OKLAHOMA CITY, June 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- IDG's CIO magazine today announced OGE Energy as a recipient of the 2011 CIO 100. The 24th annual award program recognizes organizations around the world that exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology (IT).

"This year's CIO 100 awards draws well-deserved attention to companies that are not only innovating with IT but creating genuine business value as well," said Maryfran Johnson, Editor-in-Chief of CIO Magazine & Events. "These winning companies and their IT organizations are an inspiration to businesses everywhere."

OGE was recognized for innovation in its use of technology and processes to support smart grid deployment throughout its service territory.

"We're very proud of the innovation and ingenuity that our Information Technology organization has demonstrated in the implementation of the smart grid solution," said Pete Delaney, Chairman and CEO OGE Energy.  "This award provides recognition that the IT organization has been a key component of the success of our smart grid deployment and that the technology deployment required for a successful smart grid program is a major undertaking."

As part of the smart grid effort, OGE is developing technologies related to communications, device management, sensors, data analysis, electrical grid management, event and incident management and security. The company is placing strong emphasis on the processes and interfaces that help assure all these technologies work together.

"Smart Grid is changing the way we interact with our customers," said Reid Nuttall, Vice President Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO). "As we install smart meters and technology, we could have close to one million computer devices – meters and energy management equipment – in customers' homes and businesses during the next 3 - 4 years. We are using these, and the other technologies we have implemented, to reduce costs for our customers and improve system reliability. The amount of technology and technical knowledge needed is phenomenal."

The 2011 CIO 100 awards will be presented at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo. on August 14-16 at the conclusion of the 16th annual CIO 100 Symposium® and Awards Ceremony.

About the CIO 100

The recipients of this year's CIO 100 award were selected through a three-step process. First, companies filled out an online application form detailing their innovative IT and business initiatives. Next, a team of judges reviewed the applications in depth, looking for unique practices and substantial results. Finally, CIO editors reviewed the judges' recommendations and voted on the final 100.

Complete coverage of the 2011 CIO 100 awards will be online at  on August 1 and in the August 1 issue of CIO magazine.
