New Axxia Communication Processor From LSI Features Asymmetric Multicore Architecture and Breakthrough Performance
Feb 09, 2010 (03:02 PM EST)

Innovative asymmetric multicore architecture integrates industry-leading processors to enable deterministic wireless performance up to 100 Gbps

MILPITAS, Calif., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today introduced the Axxia™ Communication Processor family designed for wireless infrastructure applications. Featuring the groundbreaking LSI™ Virtual Pipeline™ message-passing technology, Axxia Communication Processors will provide users with faster, deterministic performance for demanding wireless applications, including video streaming, web browsing and high-quality digital voice.

"The rapid growth of smartphones, netbooks and always-connected laptops is putting extreme pressure on existing wireless networks," said Bob Wheeler, senior analyst for The Linley Group. "The Axxia Communication Processor family featuring the asymmetric multicore architecture from LSI will enable networking equipment OEMs to design 3G and 4G base stations, gateways and core and access routers that have the power, intelligence and built-in security to handle this growth."

Axxia Communication Processors are capable of managing huge volumes of wireless traffic with low latency and no load on the CPU complex. The first member of the Axxia Communication Processor family, the ACP3448 processor, features four powerful PowerPC™ 476FP processor cores with a large 512KB L2 cache per core, 4 MB of system cache, integrated DDRIII memory controllers, and a wide array of intelligent offload engines, including industry-proven packet classification, traffic management, security processing and deep packet inspection. The on-chip processing elements are tied together using the new LSI Virtual Pipeline technology.

"The Axxia family contains the first devices based on the LSI asymmetric multicore architecture and featuring Virtual Pipeline technology," said Gene Scuteri, vice president, Networking Components Division, LSI. "The asymmetric multicore architecture allows LSI to deliver scalable SoC solutions with common, reusable software across platforms."

Virtual Pipeline technology uses deterministic modeling and distributed queue management to optimize inter-processor message routing, resulting in improved efficiency and less on-chip traffic congestion, delivering benefits such as wirespeed security processing with no CPU load. An LSI exclusive, Virtual Pipeline technology gives network operators the tools to manage traffic congestion in real time, improving response time and quality of service with minimal CPU utilization. Turn-key Application Development Kit (ADK) modules, application programming interfaces (API) and software modules are provided to enable users to rapidly develop software for wireless applications.

"The Axxia Communication Processor family will allow wireless service providers to handle much higher loads at lower cost, and to generate more revenue with greater customer satisfaction," said Scuteri. "Because of the innovative approach we've taken, Tier-1 mobile network equipment manufacturers are now developing systems based on the Axxia family that can cope with the immense demand being placed on wireless networks."

The first members of the Axxia family, designed to deliver 20 Gbps performance for today's wireless infrastructure requirements, will be available in February of 2010. LSI will showcase the multicore communication processors in stand AV64 at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, February 15 to 18. The LSI stand is located midway along the Avenue near the crosswalk between the Courtyard and Hall 8 of the exhibition.

As part of a comprehensive Multicore Done Right™ approach, the new LSI Axxia family provides best-in-class solutions for wireless infrastructure. Additional information on the LSI Axxia Communication Processor can be found on the LSI website at:
