Avistar Receives Additional Patent Relating to Instant Messaging, Voice over IP (VoIP) and Videoconferencing
Sep 02, 2008 (08:09 AM EDT)
SAN MATEO, Calif., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Avistar Communications Corporation , a leading provider of unified visual communications solutions, today announced that it has been granted an additional U.S. patent: 7,421,470, relating to dynamically changeable associations between users and endpoint devices -- such as desktop computers, laptops, PDAs and cell phones. Issued today, September 2, 2008, this latest patent, which joins two other Voice over IP (VoIP) patents issued during the past two months, expands Avistar's intellectual property coverage in the areas of login-based, real-time VoIP and text-based instant messaging.
Additionally, on August 20, the European Patent Office (EPO) independently confirmed Avistar's intellectual property standing in these same important areas by granting a European Patent (EP) application, comprehensively covering instant messaging, VoIP and videoconferencing that employ login-driven routing.
"This is significant because the EPO has far more stringent date requirements, and more aggressive interpretations of prior art, which make patenting more challenging," said Simon Moss, CEO, Avistar. "These new patents, which apply to service offerings and products involving one or more of real-time text, voice, and video communications, also expand Avistar's intellectual property coverage in unified communications, an area we've pioneered since the early 1990s."
Avistar intends to nationalize the EP grant in the U.K., Germany, France, the Netherlands and Sweden, all of which are large markets and manufacturing environments for instant messaging, VoIP and videoconferencing products and services.
All of these recent patents have a priority date of October 1993, and as such, predate numerous patents in instant messaging, VoIP, and videoconferencing.
Further, all of these recent patents have been explicitly allowed over the prior art and arguments submitted to the U.S. Patent Office (USPTO) by Microsoft Corporation in its re-examination challenge of Avistar's entire U.S. patent portfolio, initiated in February 2008. Subsequently, the USPTO rejected 19 of Microsoft's 29 requests, and the majority of claims in an additional patent. The re-examination process relating to the allowed requests is underway.
Avistar makes its intellectual property available to potential partners and licensees through an active licensing program. Inquiries for licensing these or any other Avistar patents may be directed to Paul D. Carmichael, Esq., (408) 252-7927.
