American Well Launches the Online Healthcare Marketplace

BOSTON and SAN FRANCISCO, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- AHIP Institute 2008 -- American Well(TM) today announced the availability of the Online Healthcare Marketplace(TM), a new, first-of-its-kind platform that enables health plans to offer online care services to consumers and physicians.
The Online Healthcare Marketplace allows credentialed healthcare providers to make themselves available to consumers for online and phone consultations at their discretion, any time, from any location, and for as long as they choose. Using a browser or a phone, consumers can gain immediate, live access to physicians in multiple specialties without leaving their homes or scheduling appointments. The ensuing interaction allows physicians to review relevant patient information, speak with and see the patients, prescribe medication and suggest follow-up care. This on-demand conversation between consumers and physicians is under advisement of the patient's care coordinator, namely their primary care physician.
"Until today, consumers were able to search online for health information, but for actual care they had to schedule appointments or wait their turn in Emergency Rooms. American Well's Online Healthcare Marketplace is using technology to turn this around and bring healthcare to people's homes, changing the rules of engagement and the convenience that goes with them. According to a recent study by the California HealthCare Foundation, 78 percent of healthcare consumers want to interact with providers online.(1) This was echoed in a recent study by TNS Global(R) and American Well, where more than 70 percent of consumers stated they are likely to use the service when it rolls out in their state. Other findings:
-- Nearly half of all respondents indicated that they would use the service to speak to a physician before heading to an office visit or the emergency room;
-- Fifty-five percent of survey participants would use the service to get a medical question answered immediately;
-- One-third of respondents would use it to avoid having to schedule an office visit, and
-- More than 60 percent of respondents believe their health plan should offer the service when it becomes available.
For physicians, practicing online care promises simplified, quicker reimbursement, no operational overhead, and the coverage of a comprehensive malpractice insurance policy introduced by a leading carrier specifically for the Online Healthcare Marketplace. Physicians indicate a strong interest in the professional and lifestyle freedom that online care allows. A 2006 Gartner study reports that more than 85 percent of physicians are looking to streamline their operations using the Internet, while more than 90 percent see the Internet as a way to gain a competitive advantage.(2) In a study by TNS Global and American Well, more than 80 percent of physicians said they are likely to use Online Care when it becomes available in their state.
