WEGENER Provides Telesat with Programming Solution to Support Multiple Time Zones and Languages
Jan 09, 2008 (08:01 AM EST)

DULUTH, Ga., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Wegener Corporation , a leading provider of equipment for television, audio and data distribution networks worldwide, today announced an order from global satellite provider Telesat to launch non-linear programming services in Canada. WEGENER's equipment will be used to complement Telesat's existing video distribution network.

"Our customers in remote locations are situated across multiple time zones and require support for multiple languages. They want more flexibility to access video programming at a convenient time," stated Paul Bush, VP North American Sales at Telesat. "We're using WEGENER's solution for file-based broadcasting to provide this flexibility and capitalize on other potential offerings, such as distribution of distance learning programs or public service announcements to remote communities."

WEGENER is supplying its iPump media servers and COMPEL network control system. In the initial deployment, the iPump media servers will be used to record live legislative proceedings for specific Canadian regions and distribute them to remote communities within the region. Content owners will remotely control content playback by accessing individual iPump media servers via a web-interface.

"File-based broadcasting allows operators to time-shift, regionalize and re-broadcast programs on a site by site basis with minimum bandwidth expenditure. Securing this order underscores growing market demand for the iPump/COMPEL solution," stated Ned L. Mountain, President and Chief Operating Officer of WEGENER. "We're excited to support Telesat's launch of this important new non-linear service offering."

Telesat's order was shipped during WEGENER's fourth quarter of fiscal 2007 and first quarter of fiscal 2008. The network is now being installed and will soon be operational.
