Airvana Delivers Femto Network Gateway in Comprehensive Platform for Fixed Mobile Convergence
Nov 26, 2007 (08:11 AM EST)
CHELMSFORD, Mass., Nov. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Airvana, Inc. , a leading provider of mobile broadband infrastructure products, today announced general availability of the company's Universal Access Gateway (UAG), a purpose-built, innovative access gateway designed to address the unique security, mobility and performance challenges that result from mobile operators using the Internet as an extension of the radio access network. Airvana's UAG is currently in multiple trials with mobile operators worldwide for fixed mobile convergence services using dual-mode mobile/Wi-Fi handsets, dual-mode mobile/Wi-Fi laptops and Airvana femtocells.
In fixed mobile convergence deployments, subscribers can access their mobile voice, video and data services while in their home or office using:
-- A dual-mode mobile/Wi-Fi handset together with a Wi-Fi access point, or
-- A dual-mode mobile/Wi-Fi laptop together with a Wi-Fi service, or
-- An existing 2G/3G handset together with a femtocell.
In all cases, the traffic is sent over the Internet in a secure tunnel to the UAG, which authenticates and inspects the traffic before sending it to the mobile operator's network. As subscribers move between their home or office and the macro cellular network, the UAG maintains seamless mobility over a secure, QoS-enabled, wireline-speed connection. Airvana is the only company to offer a complete femtocell access solution by providing both the Femto Network Gateway as well as a complete line of femtocell products.
"Fixed mobile convergence solutions can transform the indoor mobile experience by delivering unprecedented voice and data services to users in the home that they are used to receiving in more traditional mobile environments," said Sanjeev Verma, Vice President of Business Development and Co-founder of Airvana. "However, for FMC to be truly successful, operators need supporting technology that is secure, cost-effective and highly flexible. Airvana delivers this to our customers through our combination of UAG and femtocell technology."
A 14-slot carrier-class chassis with industry-leading capacity and reliability, Airvana's UAG offers unique flexibility and deployment options: (1) 3GPP Packet Data Gateway (PDG), (2) 3GPP Tunnel Termination Gateway (TTG), (3) 3GPP UMA Security Gateway, and (4) 3GPP2 Packet Data Interworking Function (PDIF). Combined with the recent addition of its Femtocell Network Gateway (FNG) solution, the UAG ensures operators and system integrators can standardize their convergence offerings on a single platform for both dual- mode and femtocell services.
