Retail station count
The annual station count dropped by slightly over 3,000 to 164,292. This is in line with the continued but increased consolidation in the industry in the past year.
ExxonMobil grabs the lead
ExxonMobil has successfully edged out ConocoPhillips to nab the No. 1 ranking in total gasoline sales in the United States. ExxonMobil reported that its gross gasoline gallonage was 24.5 billion, a 30.8 percent increase over last year's 18.7 billion gallons. Despite losing its lead, ConocoPhillips only slipped 2.8 percent to its reported figure of 20.5 billion gallons, while BP remained in the No. 3 position, experiencing a slight increase by half of a percent to 16.1 billion.

Shell nabs top spot in total assets
Jumping from third place in total assets, Royal Dutch Shell leads the category in the 2006 major oil rankings. The company, however, remained in the same positions for gross revenues, No. 7, and for net income, No. 2. ExxonMobil, last year's leader in all three rankings, held on to the No. 1 position for both revenues and net income, but fell to No. 2 for its total assets. The company also topped Fortune magazine's Fortune 500 annual ranking, moving ahead from second place last year.
Major brand retail outlet rankings
2006 was a topsy-turvy year for the oil companies' branded gasoline outlets. Most of the majors lost a number of such outlets, with CITGO experiencing the biggest decrease. Despite Shell losing 128 branded gasoline outlets in 2006, the company grabbed the top spot on the list with its 13,372 outlets throughout the country. Coming in second was BP with 12,300 reported outlets, followed by ConocoPhillips with 11,800 and ExxonMobil with 11,117. Chevron was the only company in the top five to experience a boost in branded gasoline retail outlets with 9,628, up from the 2005 figure of 9,354.
