Funambol Announces First Open Source Mobile Messaging & Sync Client for Google Android
Nov 14, 2007 (12:11 PM EST)

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Funambol, the leading provider of mobile 2.0 messaging software powered by open source, today announced it is starting an open source project, in concert with its community, to provide a Funambol mobile messaging and sync client for Google Android. The Funambol client for Android will enable Android phones to work with the free myFUNAMBOL portal to wirelessly sync PIM data and email with Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, AOL, Microsoft Outlook and other email systems. It will also enable users to wirelessly migrate PIM data such as contacts from other phones and online sources to their Android-powered phone. The first phase of the Funambol client will sync contacts and is expected to be available by the end of 2007, with a more comprehensive version available when Android phones ship in 2008.

The Funambol Client for Android is the first major open source mobile messaging project for Android. Just as Funambol recently worked with its community to develop the first native sync app for iPhone, the Funambol community expressed interest in a similar project for Android. Funambol responded by starting an open source project to collaborate with its community on a new client for Android that provides PIM sync and push email capabilities.

"Google Android can make a huge impact on the mobile business, like the iPhone, but in a very different way," said Fabrizio Capobianco, CEO of Funambol. "The iPhone had a beautiful interface but was closed and lacked a public SDK. It also worked within the confines of existing mobile operator business models. Android is the opposite -- it is the ultimate open SDK for mobile devices whose interface and capabilities are limited only by the imagination of developers. Its ad-sponsored business model can radically challenge the dynamics of the wireless industry. We are very excited to work with our community to provide a Funambol client for Android."

Last week, Funambol announced the availability of the first over-the-air native sync app for the iPhone, which resulted in more weekly downloads and myFUNAMBOL registrations than any other release in Funambol history. This app was developed with the Funambol community, which demonstrated how the open source community model can support new mobile devices more quickly than other approaches. This is further enabled by Funambol's basis on standards from the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) for data synchronization and device management.

"The iPhone demonstrates the new razor blade strategy to make money in mobile -- provide a handset that consumers love with a server-based service such as iTunes for recurring revenue," said Hal Steger, Funambol Vice President of Marketing. "We've been pioneering mobile open source software since 2002. The Funambol client for Android adds a bit of our software to enable the Android open source handset to work with our world leading mobile open source server. It's the perfect match of open handset and open server that can afford new opportunities to sync and monetize mobile apps, services and content. It's great that someone with Google's clout and resources will accelerate market adoption of mobile open source software."

Funambol provides open source-based push email, contacts and calendars for over 1.5 billion mobile devices, including phones from Apple, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and others. A commercial version of the company's software has been adopted by mobile operators and service providers around the globe, including Earthlink in the U.S. and 1&1 in Europe.
