College.com Launches 'College-Only' Social Network
Sep 27, 2007 (08:09 AM EDT)
NEW YORK, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- College.com today announced the launch of a college-only social network as a personalized, integral part of college life.
"Facebook has largely abandoned its core student audience in favor of an open platform for widget aficionados, businesses and soccer moms," said founder Jon Davidman. "College.com is emerging in this vacuum as the collegiate-only social network. We connect students to their social life as well as their course work."
The site is a one-stop shop for information and communication between students. Students can create user profiles and connect online with people in their classes. College.com even offers a Wake Up Call system that will alert your phone when you need to wake for class.
College.com integrates course schedules, professor profiles and rankings, event listings, study aids and other features that combine the academic elements of college with a student's social life. Students can also access online note cards to organize their workload and study for exams.
With each user's experience catered to the school they attend, students can view school specific events from Greek life to student organizations as well as view local news and weather information.
College.com stays true to the school by requiring an .edu address. "Facebook is no longer for college students," said Florida State University student Kim Allen. "Having your information listed on Facebook is like leaving an open copy of your personal diary for anyone to read. Eventually the wrong person is going to see that information. I don't need to lose sleep worrying about new photos or comments that a future employer or family friends may see. College.com allows me to have fun in college without worrying about filtering content."
