Aligning with Employees to Lower Healthcare Costs, United Way of Greater St. Louis Partners with HooPayz

ST. LOUIS, May 21, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- United Way of Greater St. Louis, seeking to educate employees to use health benefits more efficiently and understand healthcare bills, is partnering in a Beta test with HooPayz, a local healthcare services technology company specializing in healthcare consumerism.
Through the partnership, United Way employees gain access to a suite of tools designed to educate, empower and create better healthcare consumers. The HooPayz platform provides critical insight into the cost of care and teaches employees to use their health benefits efficiently, including understanding their medical bills.
"We work to change employee behaviors that drive down costs for our employers and then quantify those savings," according to Susan L. Lang, HooPayz CEO. "This supports the cultural and financial shifts already occurring in the market, as demonstrated by the national movement to higher deductible health benefit plans."
Studies and polls routinely show how unprepared employees are to take financial responsibility for their healthcare choices. In the past, most of the burden fell to the employer. "Looking ahead, we see those costs shared between employer and employees in a much more evenly divided way as employers try to figure out how to manage the projected 35% increase in premiums by 2017," says Lang, a former senior executive at Express Scripts.
The American Society of Actuaries published a study in March that says the average premium for health benefits will go up 35% by 2017. Many employers are concerned that huge increases in costs, coupled with the complexities of healthcare reform, will impact their bottom line.
"Working closely with United Way has provided us with a tremendous opportunity to test our assumptions, business model and, most importantly, our impact on behaviors and costs. It also gives us a chance to assist an organization that is committed to St. Louis and our surrounding communities," said Lang.
Lang says HooPayz is also committed to growing the company in St. Louis by creating more technology jobs. "We've had great support from the St. Louis business community and are optimistic about our opportunities for long term growth."
