Microsoft faces the same embrace-or-be-destroyed alternatives from the burgeoning open-source software movement that it faced with the Internet years ago, argues David Stutz, who recently retired as Microsoft's group program manager for the Shared Source Common Language, in a copy of his retirement letter he posted on the Web last week.

Microsoft agrees with much of what Stutz says, according to a company spokes- woman, "but Microsoft believes breakthroughs will come mostly through commercial software companies, like Microsoft."
