Just before midnight on Sept. 18, Microsoft issued a strong security warning and urged users of all Windows operating systems to apply a critical patch immediately. The company said two flaws "could enable an attacker to gain complete control over a user's system." Both are within every version of the Microsoft Java Virtual machine, which is also packaged with Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Patches are available at www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/ MS02-052.asp. Microsoft also released a security bulletin about another flaw that could lead to disclosure of information for users of Windows 2000 and XP.
