Gateway Inc. on Thursday unveiled its digital music player with a color screen for showing photos, joining Apple Computer Inc. in selling music gadgets that can also display pictures.

The Irvine, Calif., company is taking preorders for its $249.99 MP3 Photo Jukebox player, which has a 4GB hard drive and a 1.6-inch display. The gadget also includes a rechargeable batter that can be replaced.

At 3.4 ounces, the player is about the size of Apple's iPod Mini, which can't show photos. Apple on Tuesday introduced new iPods that can play music and show pictures. Those devices are bigger and have hard drives as large as 60GB, but cost substantially more than Gateway's new product. The beefier iPods cost as much as $599.

The Gateway player can connect to PCs and to digital cameras over a USB 2.0 port, and can show pictures either individually or in a slide show. The device is scheduled for release next month.
