Suddenly, vendor road shows aimed at SMBs seem to be all the rage. SAP held SAP SMB Forum 2004 in various cities across India September-October. Microsoft, for its part, launched Microsoft Across America at the TechXNY show on October 5 with a fleet of 7 elaborately decorated trucks that will tour 250 U.S. cities through June 2005. Visitors can attend free half-day seminars, many in movie theaters, and try out programs such as Microsoft Business Solutions Retail Management System in the trucks. SAS on 64-bit Linux.
In collaboration with Intel, SAS will bring its SAS9 BI platform to the Linux 64-bit operating system on the Intel Itanium 2 processor in November. The industry research firm IDC forecasts the market segment for Itanium processor-based servers shipped with Linux to grow to $2 billion by 2008. SAS reports the financial services industry is aggressively adopting the 64-bit Linux platform because of the return on investment.
MySQL and Embarcadero Partner.
Embarcadero Technologies, a popular provider of data life-cycle management solutions, and open source enterprise database provider MySQL are partnering to promote tools for migrating, optimizing, and testing MySQL databases and applications. "Open source databases have matured to the point where organizations can now truly realize the cost benefits while maintaining the full functionality of their systems," said Charlie Garry, senior program director at META Group. "Organizations are now looking for the best ways to successfully migrate, manage, and test their systems."

It's quick and actionable intelligence for sales groups using Microsoft Outlook: Leverage Software debuted recently with a product called Relationship Intelligence that discovers and visualizes relationships with potential customers across an organization by combining organizationwide Outlook contact information with external syndicated data. Sensitive to the salesperson's concerns, contact details such as phone number can be hidden by the person who owns the contact, forcing a colleague to request an introduction.
