Manage Your Newsletter Subscription Quote Of The Day: "When you play, play hard; when you work, don't play at all." -- Theodore Roosevelt Editor's Note: A Weekend With An iPhone -- I Hope What are you doing this weekend? As I write this, it's Friday morning, and I'm hoping I'll be working this weekend, posting image galleries and writing reviews of the iPhone. Of course, to do that, I need to get my hands on an iPhone. So, Friday at 5:45 p.m., 15 minutes before the iPhone goes on sale, I plan to grab my wee small PowerBook, credit card, and a printout of locations of local Apple and AT&T stores. I'll make sure my GPS is charged up, and hit the road on a search for a store that will sell me an iPhone. I'll blog my adventures on InformationWeek's Mac blog -- that's why I'm bringing the PowerBook, so I can blog from nearby Wi-Fi hotspots. informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2007/06/im_in_love_with.html informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/switching_from_windows_to_mac/index.html I expect I will be able to buy an iPhone Friday night. Despite the stories of people lining up days in advance to buy an iPhone, my gut feeling is that, if you want to go to bed Friday night with an iPhone under your pillow, you'll be able to do that without much trouble. So I haven't been paying anyone to stand in line for me or to cause a diversion so I can cut to the front of the queue.. informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=200000853 informationweek.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=200001204 informationweek.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=200001182 I am doing one trick to improve my odds: I work from a home office in a town called La Mesa, Calif. It's right on the San Diego city limits. If I drive west, I quickly reach the city -- San Diego, which is just crawling with Mac enthusiasts. If I drive east, I arrive just as quickly in horse-farming country and desert. So I'm going to head east first in search of my iPhone; I figure if you have a horse (or are one), chances are you aren't interested enough in an iPhone to line up Friday night to buy one. Once I get the iPhone -- assuming I do -- I'll head straight home and, of course, I'll take it out of the box right away. And I'll take unboxing photos, too, and we'll run an image gallery of that as soon as we can get the images posted. Then, when that's done, I'll roll up my sleeves and start evaluating the iPhone. I'll write my review, create another image gallery, and hopefully get the whole thing posted by Sunday or first thing Monday morning. Watch the InformationWeek iPhone Resource Page and the Mac blog for progress reports, image galleries, and the review. informationweek.com/mobile/iphone/ informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/switching_from_windows_to_mac/index.html Meanwhile, I've started a checklist of things to do for when I'm evaluating the iPhone. Today's Top Story: What Else? Eye On iPhone Late yesterday, Apple and AT&T began selling the iPhone, the most hyped technology product in years. The device is notable in that it combines a cell phone, a Web browser, and a media player with a touch-screen interface. Despite Apple's success with the Macintosh computer and the iPod, it remains to be seen how customers will respond to the iPhone. InformationWeek presents this collection of stories, blogs, and images so you can make an informed decision for yourself or your company. informationweek.com/mobile/iphone/ 3. Last Week's Highlighted Coverage Verizon Wireless Tries To Counter iPhone Frenzy With Store Stunt Verizon said its stores and kiosks will stay open until 9 p.m. Friday so customers can 'test drive' and purchase any of its 18 multimedia music devices. informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=200001470 What To Do When Windows Vista Crashes: Little-Known Recovery Strategies Because Microsoft's new operating system is bigger than its predecessors, it's more of a pain to reinstall.
