Adobe Systems Inc. on Tuesday released in beta software for reading and managing electronic books and other digital publications.

The Adobe Digital Editions supports the company's popular PDF document format, as well as XHTML-based publications. The software provides a straightforward approach to downloading, reading and managing e-books, the company said in announcing the new software at its Adobe Max user conference in Las Vegas, Nev.

The new product builds upon the Adobe Reader software for PDF documents, adding support for Flash interactivity and rich media. In addition, Digital Editions can be installed in Adobe Acrobat, software for creating PDF documents, and Reader, and launched from their user interfaces.

The new software also provides copyright-protection technology publishers can use to control access to content. Digital Editions is expected to be available soon for free download from the Adobe Labs Web site. Version 1.0 is expected to ship early next year.
