Google Inc. on Tuesday said webmasters building pages for mobile phones could now use its tools for helping the search engine giant find content on the Internet.
The Google Mobile Sitemaps program is an extension of a beta program that the Mountain View, Calif., company launched in June. Google Sitemaps enables webmasters to design pages that can be found by Google spiders, which add the pages to the company's web index. Spiders also periodically revisit sites to find new or changed content.
The new program does the same for web pages designed for the small screens of cellular phones. By releasing Mobile Sitemaps, Google hopes to expand its coverage of the mobile web by speeding up the discovery and addition of pages to its index, the company said in its blog.
