LONDON — Handelsbanken Capital Markets said that gathering strength the PC and mobile phone markets lead it to expect the three-month rolling average of worldwide semiconductor sales for April, due to be announced by the U.S. Semiconductor Industry Association in the next few days, to be $18.53 billion.

This would be up from $18.43 billion in March and up 9.1 percent year-on-year.

According to Handelsbanken this would mean that "actual" semiconductor sales in April were $17.68 billion, up 11 percent compared with April 2004. In turn this would represent a rebound in semiconductor growth. March actual semiconductor sales were up 6.3 percent year-on-year and February sales were 9.6 percent ahead of the $15.80 billion posted for February 2004.

The SIA's Global Sales Report is tabulated by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization as a moving three-month average to reduce the swings due to reporting effects from different companies.

"We believe that PC, handset and telecom equipment chips all showed strong sales in April," said Bruce Diesen, strategist with Handelsbanken.
