hybrid drive
A hard disk drive that contains a built-in, non-volatile cache comprised of flash memory. Reads and writes go through the cache first, enabling the platters to remain at rest most of the time. For laptops especially, the less the disk rotates, the less power is used. There is also less wear on the drive no matter whether the computer is portable or not. In addition, hybrid drives may reduce noise because the fans in most systems are slowed down when there is less heat in the cabinet.

Faster Boot Times
When any system is powered on, there is a slight delay waiting for the disk to spin up to speed. However, if the flash memory is used to store the operating system kernel or current state of the system when hibernating, starting back up is significantly faster. See cache, flash memory, ReadyDrive, solid state disk, Robson cache and NV cache. See also hybrid player.
