How do you decide whom to friend on social networks? Do you friend anyone who asks, or only people you know in real life? Do you have different rules for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr, etc.?
I'm fairly selective about who I friend these days. I started out friending just about anyone on any service. LinkedIn was the first one where I made a rule that I had to know someone to connect with them. Then I made the same rule on Facebook. Most recently, I did the same thing on Twitter -- went from following about 800 people to following about 200. On Flickr, I friend people with interesting photos.
I generally friend pretty promiscuously when I'm just getting started on a new social networking service, then winnow the list if I stay with the service.
What are your habits?
