"But from a security standpoint, Firefox 3 is a step backward." How on earth can you make such a broad statement without any information to back it up?? How about a little more info than just "but the new features are unreliable"? What specifically is unreliable about these new features?
Sure, anti-phishing and anti-malware lists will never be perfect or 100% up-to-date, but that's no reason to not have them in the first place. And to say that Firefox 3 is "a step backward" in security is simply irresponsible.
There's a lot more to the security picture than the end-user tools. I would argue that one of the biggest security metrics of a browser is how quickly they fix and deploy critical security bugs, in which case Firefox is way ahead of the competition.
If you would like to be taken seriously as a "journalist", please refrain from making such unsubstantiated and sensational claims. Firefox 3 is an excellent browser when it comes to security, so unless you have more evidence of how it is actually worse than Firefox 2, your claim that it's "a step backwards" is out of line.

Whoa, Toby, you sound like an uber-sensitive Mozilla security engineer. Time to cut back on the coffee and send Mitch an apology!
And, BTW, I hope you've learned to RTFA before you start blasting like that. It only makes YOU look bad.

Even, I was wondering the same. Why (or rather what) on Earth made the author comment on Firefox 3 being worse than Firefox 2.
Please don't mislead your audience. If you have enough evidence about your posts, please put them in here. Mozilla will eventually know about it and they will try to improve upon. But, this kind of false information does no good.
Firefox is having a party and you are trying to spoil it. Come on, spare this day atleast!

Its good that there is a way to disable the Smart Location Bar that you call awsome. I hated that feature and started looking around how to go back to FF 2 until i found a way to fix config and disable smart location bar. But now my location bar doesnt suggest me even my previously visited websites(I just wanted website suggestions and not the bookmarks) . I wish i could have the exact same address bar without going thru all the extention pain etc.
The whole Smart Location Bar seems to be a big mistake from the FF Product team. I mean the feature might be good for some but there should have been easier way to disable it rather than updating config file. I guess many FF users will move to IE 7 just because of that feature. I was almost about to.

Kasi - LikeI told Toby, I answered that question in the article. In case you missed it:
Firefox 3 includes new security features designed to warn users when they visit phishing sites and sites that try to download malware to their computers. Sounds great in theory -- but the feature failed more than half the time in testing.
This is not a big deal for users with even a moderate degree of sophistication. They know better than to click on questionable links.
But naive users -- the ones most at risk from phishing and malware -- might think that the Firefox security precautions work, and if Firefox lets them through to a site, the site must be honest.
So the fact that the warning feature is unreliable makes the Internet more dangerous than if the warnings didn't exist at all.

@toby, Those capabilities in Firefox 3 create a false sense of security in less than adept users. That's a very risky condition, and why it is a step backwards for some. I took a look at FF3 today, and came to the same conclusion as Mitch.

The anti-Firefox comments are not coincidental:

What's even worse about InformationWeek is that we disguise our anti-open-source bias by using code-phrases like saying that Firefox is "fast," it "burns up the Web," and it's a "great browser." And I say right in the article that I've been using FF3 as my primary browser since December.
Even worse, something I've been keeping secret: I've been using Firefox as my primary browser since Version 0.9.
But you've found me out! I actually HATE Firefox! And I ate open source! Curses, I would've gotten away with it too if it wasn't for you pesky kids!

Mitch... you "ate open source"? Was it good? It always leaves me wanting more.
Thanks for the informative article. I always appreciate your articles as well as the many other InformationWeek articles.
Keep up the great work.

Reviewers often want to say something "fresh" or different, especially about something they know is going to be big no matter what they say. This article really had to reach to find something "bad" though. Firefox has not had any security features removed but it has had some added, yet the headline claims it's less secure?
There's nothing in Firefox or any product that says "we guarantee to protect you from all Internet threats", and a novice user isn't going to even find the new security features, let alone do insecure things because they are there.
If IW actually wants to contribute, perhaps they could write a balanced article that provides more details on what "failed half of the time".

In case you missed it, here's what Mitch wrote:
"Firefox 3 includes new security features designed to warn users when they visit phishing sites and sites that try to download malware to their computers. Sounds great in theory -- but the feature failed more than half the time in testing. "
I don't know if you're illiterate, or just stupid, but since you wrote out a legible comment I'm guessing the latter. It's quite clear what failed. I personally wouldn't mind seeing sources for tests, but I take it on good faith that he does indeed have a source for that statement. There certainly isn't any confusion over what feature he is referring to.
Also, a "balanced" article? What? This weighs the pros and cons of the new Firefox, and then makes a recommendation based on that (in favor of Firefox no less, which should please you - you seem to be a Firefox fanboy disclosure: I use Firefox as my only browser). Balanced is just a media buzzword you heard on Fox News and thought would be cool to throw around. In the future, don't waste our time spewing garbage in the comments.
In regards to Firefox 3.0, I upgraded both my PCs on download day and I am loving it so far. I really like the new default theme, and the Awesome Bar is truly awesome.

This discussion dovetails perfectly with the Eric Zeman article about arrogant fanboys and noxious haters. LOL!
